TANNER'S STORE BEING PURCHASED BY MORGAN COUNTY TOURISM ALLIANCE
The Morgan County Tourism Alliance (MCTA) and Charles Tanner, the owner of Tanner's Store in downtown Wartburg, have entered into a sales agreement whereby the MCTA will purchase the Store for the purpose of saving and preserving this unique structure and family legacy. After many discussions and meetings, the Alliance determined that the importance of this building to the community could not be understated; as a consequence, the Alliance membership approved funds for its purchase this week. The majority of funding for this purchase was provided by a private donor who appreciates the significance of the Tanner building.
Mark Keck, MCTA Chair, states that "The MCTA is proud to work together with the Tanner family to preserve the Tanner Store, which holds a special place in the history of Wartburg and Morgan County. The Store is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and the MCTA is honored to help support that designation and its legacy."
Marta Monroe has a special connection to Tanners, "To have Tanner’s store open again and functioning as it has in the past is fantastic for our town of Wartburg. Most of us have wonderful memories of ice cream cones and treats from Tanner’s Soda Fountain and we are so thankful to have this opportunity to bring it back to life."
The MCTA plans to place the property under a preservation easement to assure the building's present and future protection, and will work with the Tanner family and local community to develop building uses compatible with the building's history as well as growing tourist interest in the area. The Tanner name will always be attached to the building and its legacy will prevail.
MCTA will continue to keep the community advised of plans and progress as the preservation of this historical building begins."
